The charity Trees for Cities is holding a fund raising run called the Tree-Athlon this Saturday 15 September in Battersea Park. Originally set up in 1993 as Trees for London it now has tree projects in cities throughout the UK, Eastern Europe and East Africa and has helped plant and protect over 450,000 trees in London.
The Tree-Athlon is a 5km race that goes all around Battersea Park and doubles back on itself along the riverside. Registration is £18, runners have to be at least 14 years old and can register online at the Trees for Cities website. Money raised by the run will go towards a street tree planting project and a new wildlife garden for a school in London, a new woodland in Leeds, a fruiting orchard in Addis Ababa, a school tree nursery in Nairobi and a re-forestation project near Ica in Peru.
The Tree-Athlon village for participating runners opens at 8.45am on the Albert Bridge Road side of Battersea Park, there’s a warmup session at 9.30am and the race starts at 10.15am. Get along if you’re feeling fit and want to contribute to spreading more trees around London. Map
