Robert Pires picked up the award for probably the worst penalty kick in the history of English football yesterday.
Arsenal playing Manchester City, leading 1-0 on an earlier Pires penalty, and we get another late in the second half to seal a close game, shouldn’t be a problem.
Then Pires and Thierry Henry try to be clever and instead of Pires running up and smashing the thing into the back of the net, their idea is Pires strolls up, rolls the ball to the left and Henry runs in and scores. Why, is the only thing you can say.
You’ve got the ball on the spot twelve yards from goal, the keeper’s fixed on his line and you have all the time in the world to run and hit it.
If you’re going to try this play you better make sure it comes off and unfortunately Pires only managed to brush the top of the ball, wasn’t allowed to touch it until another player did and City got a free kick.
Arsenal get a lot of criticism from the press for over elaborating their play and this just gives the tabloids another stick to beat them with.
Pires is so lucky the game ended 1-0 or he’d never hear the end of it.
