What’s in a name

My team, Arsenal, are moving to a new stadium in 2006 and today announced it will be named after their next sponsor Emirates Airlines.

I know this is pretty common in US sports but it’s one of the first times a major team in the UK has done this.
There’s so much tradition, history and local passion invested in British football clubs that I think they can only get away with it when, like Arsenal, they build a brand new arena.

Emirates Stadium, guess I can live with that for a while, better than Easyjet Park anyway.

I think it sucks. I think they should draw the line and say ‘okay shirt advertising, tv commercials etc. but we get to name our stadium after whoever we like’.

I don’t mind a tag line in press releases saying ‘Arsenal Stadium’ or ‘Herbert Chapman Stadium sponsored by Emirates Airlines’.

Next thing they’ll want the team named ‘Emirates Gunners’.
