You can definitely tell winter’s just around the corner, it’s been a mixture of wind and rain with a little bit of sun today and by 3.30pm I had to switch the lights on inside and it was hammering down outside.
Officially the sunset’s at 4.08pm but with the black clouds things were just a little too dark and also after about 3 o’clock in the afternoon you feel the temperature starting to drop, I’m not someone who likes rooms to be hot but we’re now into the period where you need something to raise the mercury a couple of degrees.
December, January and February are obviously the coldest months in the UK, the average high in the winter is about 7C/45F and the nighttime low 0C/32F, so its not the arctic but its not that warm either.
If you’re coming on a visit during this period you’ll probably end up using an umbrella at some point, December and January are the wettest two months of the year in London and surprisingly February’s rainfall traditionally drops to two thirds that of previous two months according to the stats.
The thing that can make the winter time really miserable for people here is the amount or lack of daylight. Today sunrise was at 7.22am and sunset 4.09pm and you can pretty much add a minute on and take a minute off each of those respectively every day until 21 December, the shortest day of the year, when the sunrise will be at 8.04am and the sunset’s at 3.53pm, 7hours and 49 whole minutes of daylight. The thing to do is make sure you’re up and at ‘em by 8 o’clock otherwise it’ll seem like your in a permanent twilght world.
The forecast for the next week is very changeable, the wind looks like it’ll be coming from all directions so expect sun, clouds and rain. Tomorrow is predicted to be sunny with clear skies, a top temperature of 11C/52F with humidity at 52%, which is good because it makes the tubes more pleasant to ride on.
If you’ve got a trip to London in the next couple of months you don’t need to pack like you’re heading skiing, but something that’s waterproof and stops the wind going through you is what’s needed to make being out and about nothing to worry about.
