Death of a living legend

The coverage today of the death of George Best at the age of 59 and the week leading up to it, probably backs up the claims that he was the greatest British or Irish player ever. Most football fans alive now will only have seen the clips from the 60’s and early 70’s and can only listen to people who did see him play, but the list of those who rate him the greatest ever is so big and so broad, players, managers, famous fans, that the weight of opinion makes George Best the man.

I know there are plenty of people who disliked him for his lifestyle, an alcoholic all his life who had a liver transplant and carried on drinking, who first retired at 26, blew a fortune and really wasted some of the prime years of his career, but when you look at the old film of him, BBC, Sky etc have all been showing tributes, you can’t help but say what a player, what a genius with a football.
