They take a different approach to football crowd control on the continent as the Portuguese are showing on the eve of Euro 2004.
Allowing fans to smoke a little dope to mellow them out is a good idea, one the Portuguese have copied from the Dutch who hosted Euro 2000.
It probably wouldn’t hurt them to hand out a little baggie to each England fan arriving in Lisbon judging by some of the early English arrivals shown on the news last night.
‘If it wasn’t for the English you’d be Krauts’ they were singing at passing Portuguese while drinking 21/2 pint beers at local cafes.
I suppose it would be a waste of time to point out Portugal were neutral in WW2.

Most pubs are getting decked out with flags, the timing of the games is great, two games a day a 5pm and 7.45pm for the next 12 days, then the quarter and semi finals, so I imagine most bars and pubs will have a lot more early evening customers.
The supermarkets are banging out the cases of beer at half price.
Well England have qualified for Euro 2004 in Portugal but I imagine the Portugese authorities are just realising what a headache they’ll be in for next summer.
Tonight’s game in Turkey has involved months of planning to keep potential hooligans away from the game.
Its been bellowed across Britain the last few months that you won’t get into the game in Istanbul or probably even the country, yet still fans have been trying and these are most likely not the hardcore troublemakers.
If you’re a copper in Portugal, forget about summer vacation next year.

The last game of the season. The last chance for the Arsenal to win something this season.
Arsenal are the favourites over Southampton in the FA Cup final this afternoon, but with key men Vieria and Campbell missing I’m a little worried.
Kickoffs about a half-hour away and its time to get a beer to settle the pre-game nerves.
Halftime: Arsenal 1-0 Southampton
Pretty even game, Arsenal have played well in patches and had the best chances, Pires finished off a nice move for the goal. I’m still not convinced by their defence and can see The Saints scoring at some point.
Where’s that bottle opener?
Fulltime: COME ON! Never in doubt, never in doubt. Arsenal 1-0 Southampton and who would have thought any other result possible.
My boys controlled the second half, wasted a bunch of chances but still had enough to win out.
Where’s that champagne?
