The Football Association are due to take control of the new Wembley Stadium today after the last checks are made by the local council and a safety certificate is issued. The new Wembley is a year over due and its more than six years since the old one closed but England is finally going to get a new national football stadium.
Wembley is located in northwest London in the borough of Brent and the first people to get a good look around the new stadium are 60,000 Brent residents who’ll be going along for a community day on 17 March. They’ll see a mini tournament featuring celebrity teams and the day will help the organisers test out the turnstiles, escaltors and toilets, and see how large crowds move around the ground.
The first game scheduled to take place there is on the following Saturday, 24 March, when England play Italy in a under-21 international. That could be the biggest crowd for an under-21 game ever. Wembley has come in at a cost of £800million and it should be a bit more comfortable for the fans, among other things they have 2618 lavatories compared with 400 in the old stadium.
The players might not be too happy, teams have grown used to collecting medals and trophies on a podium brought onto the pitch, in the new Wembley there are 107 steps up to the Royal Box where presentations will take place. The last thing you need if you’ve just lost and have to collect a runners-up medal. The first major game due to be played there is the FA Cup Final on 19 May.
