Owen transfer

Michael Owen has moved from Real Madrid to Newcastle today and I can’t help thinking maybe he’s reached the peak of his career.

He’s still only 25 and sure he’ll score a lot of goals for Newcastle, but when you think about the way he exploded at the 1998 World Cup, joining Newcastle, who are second bottom of the Premiership,in his prime would not have been part of the career plan.

I know he has a lot of supporters among the ex-professionals in England who would put him in any team in the world, but when Real Madrid are happy for him to leave after one year and when the big clubs in England, Chelsea, Man.United, Arsenal won’t touch him it has to tell you that Owen is a very, very good player but not the great one we thought he’d be.
Wayne Rooney will deliver what Owen showed promise to.

I agree. Arsenal wanted Baptista, but didn’t want Owen. Baptista is now with Real.

A big part of Owen’s game is speed and when that starts to fade so will his goals.

Rooney is like Shearer, a bulldozer who can intimidate defenders. He should be good for a while but I reckon weight and injuries wil get him.

Totally disagree.
He’ll have another good burst at Newcastle. Their style of play will adapt to suit Owen. Arsenal need a big tall guy to hold the ball up, not a ‘fox in the box’.
