Read some nonsense from big mouth Chelsea chief executive, Peter Kenyon, in the paper tonight. He claims Chelsea are going to ‘own London’, be the biggest team in town, already have 8 million fans in the UK(what!) and 20million overseas.
He thinks the club’s new found wealth, some slick marketing (he used to run sportswear manufacturer Umbro) and some success on the field is going to change the fanbase makeup in London. I think he’s in for a surprise.
There are twelve professional teams in London, six of them in the Premiership, and Chelsea have always been around the third or fourth best supported team behind Arsenal and Tottenham.
Chelsea will pick up a load of bandwagon jumpers, who were probably supporting Man. United two years ago, but the real fans will stick with their own teams who they follow through family tradition, geographical location and years of supporting in good times and bad.
Supporting a football team is not like choosing a Pepsi over a Coke just because one’s got Beyonce in the commercial, but its something Kenyon, Abramovich and Chelsea’s nouveau fans probably won’t understand.
