hugo-chavez_ken-livingstone.jpgKen Livingstone the current London Mayor has been chosen by the Labour Party as their official candidate for the next mayoral election, a year from now on 1 May 2008.

Livingstone will be trying to win a third consecutive four year term as mayor and has said recently he sees it as a stepping stone to holding on to power until at least 2016, after winning again in 2012. I think it’ll be a disaster for London if he stays mayor for that long. He’s says he’s the mayor for all Londoners but he’s clearly not, what he is is an old school, dyed in the wool, left wing idealogue and if you don’t agree with his views you can go hang.

Power is what he wants, proved by the fact that when if wasn’t selected to run as the Labour candidate in 2000 he ran as an independent and was kicked out of the party. Londoners must have been on a collective acid trip because Livingstone was elected and the Labour Party once again showed they had no principles by re-admitting him as their official candidate four years later when they realised the guy they wanted to run against him couldn’t win.

I think a postion like London Mayor should have a limit of two four year terms. Before he ever got in Ken Livingstone said he didn’t want to serve more than one term, now he sees it as a job for life, and like most of the left wing leaders he admires, Castro, Chavez, Mugabe, he thinks he’s the only one capable of doing the job. As the official Labour candidate he’s almost assured victory because people will vote for their party allegiances, I just hope the other parties can come up with a viable alternative before next May.
