London to get desalination plant along the Thames

thames.jpgLondoners will be looking at the River Thames a little differently from now on because in two years time they might be drinking the water from it. The go-ahead was given yesterday for the construction of a desalination plant costing £200 million at Beckton, just on the east side of London City Airport.

The plant operated by Thames Water will be able to produce 140 million litres of drinking water a day, which should be enough for around one million people. The company says it will only be used in periods of low rain or drought conditions. They wouldn’t have needed it this year there’s been plenty of rain, but 2006 was exceptionally dry for SouthEast England and having a plant like that would have been very useful, it might also put a stop to the scare stories about water use and price hikes.
