London’s surf is up

surf.jpgLooks like London will be the next stop on the international surfing tour. Well maybe not quite, but it is set to get a large indoor surf centre called the Surfdome that’ll have a 75m long pool and a wave machine that will supposedly let users ride up to 8ft waves for around 60m.

I guess it’ll make the owners some money but its kind of like Dubai with their giant indoor ski slope, its not what you really go there for. You can surf around the British Isles of course, Cornwall’s a well established surf centre and the West of Ireland is starting to attract more surfers. Bournemouth, a seaside town on the south coast of England about 90 miles southwest of central London, is building Europe’s first artificial reef in a move to boost the local economy and attract some of the surfers from London who currently head for Cornwall.

Construction is due to start on it in May this and finish by October and will involve placing huge long bags of sand in about 6 metres of water 250 metres of shore. I think that’ll be a bit more fun and challenging than the indoor version.
