Westminster Council is going to remove all parking meters and pay and display machines from central London by the end of 2008. No they’ve not taken pity on the oppressed British motorist, they’re going to replace all cash based meter systems with one where the car driver has to pay by text message.
They’re doing it because of the amount of thefts from the meters, over £100,000 per week, which just goes to show what a money making racket charging for parking is in London. The chairman of the council committee responsible, Brian Connell, said ‘based on the evidence we heard last night, there are compelling customer benefits as well as a strong financial case for the council to introduce a cashless parking strategy city-wide and remove all parking meters within the next 18 months. Customer benefits, Brian Connell you’re a funny guy, he goes on to make some facile comment about it being better for the environment but its all about raking in more money.
If you’re coming to London in the next year or so and plan to drive in Westminster don’t forget to you’ll have two calls to make now, one to pay the congestion charge and one to park your car.
