The main news item in the UK at the moment is the killing of a policewoman and the shooting of her colleague on friday. They answered a call of a robbery at a travel agents and were shot by the three armed robbers, neither of the policewomen had guns.
There’s been a lot of calls for the police to all be armed, which I agree with, we’re not living in some cosy 1950’s situation where crime was low and a bobby on the beat was all that was needed.
One of the senior cops in Yorkshire, where the shooting happened, said the county already had enough armed response units to handle this type of incident. Well obviously he doesn’t because two unarmed officers walked into half a dozen bullets when they got to the scene, its no use the cops with the guns being five miles away waiting to here if they’re needed.
Newspaper photos yesterday showed police with big arse machine guns guarding the crime scene, a little late for that was my thought.
Nobody disagrees that the number of gun crimes is growing a lot but people still expect police to turn up with just a baton to potentially meet somebody with an Uzi, doesn’t sound like a fair fight to me.

I have a friend who is a former LAPD officer, now living in Hawaii. He told me he used to go on patrol in his car every night solo. He would pull over a car load of people, put his brights on them and tell them to stick their hands out of all the windows. The reason he could do that (and he told me he found Uzi’s on people!) was that he was armed and had tremendous support.
Training is super important as well as the tools. The police are always outnumbered, its only fair to give them the tools to do the job.
