Athens 2004

Watching the Olympics over the first three days one thing has been obvious, for one reason or another the crowds just aren’t turning up to events.

I don’t know if its the ticket prices, the fear of terror attacks, the hot weather or just the sports on offer that are putting people off but so many arenas look empty.

Personally I think the Olympics is way to big now with sports that just shouldn’t be on the programme.
Why is tennis an Olympic sport? I watched some yesterday played in a fantastic looking stadium with about thirty fans watching.
Wimbledon finished a few weeks ago, the Olympics finishes on 29th August and the US Open tennis starts on 30th August, no one cares who wins a tennis gold.

Likewise football, we’ve just had the European Championships and Copa America finish in July and most European leagues are or will be up and running in the next week, I don’t know anyone who could care less who becomes Olympic champs.

There are about 37 different sports in the Olympics right now and they want to add things like rugby, cricket and golf.
Forget it, cut it down to around twenty sports make it more manageable and desirable for fans.

You forgot to mention darts.

Atleast we’d get a bloody medal right? Think laterally and you’ll go far.

heheh, J

I read a book a while ago called ‘Pagan Holiday’ by Tony Perottet. He follows the trail of ancient Roman tourists and one chapter is on the Olympics.

Back in those days one had to be upper class to travel but conditions were pretty grim. Guest houses were in short supply, food was awful, the heat was relentless and one visitor decribed a trip to the Olympics as a kind of punishment.

Oh, for the good old days when seeing the Olympics was an Olympian feat!

That Roman who described the Olympics as a punishment must have been watching the dressage or synchronized swimming.

Hey, Chris, I like dressage or synchronized swimming - teamwork just like soccer, but more refined and civil.

Come on Mary, I know you like a bit of blood and guts really.

What annoys me is that we are forced to compete as “Great Britain”. I don’t want a GB team and it’s ridiculous “Union Flag”. I want England and St. George

I’ve also noticed the blatant racism with regard to picking the athletics team. The majority are black. Just imagine the outcry if the team was entirely white. Again, one rule for some… It’s time proper quotas were introduced, to better reflect the population.

Can’t agree with having quotas Judy, the only thing our team needs is people who are good enough and British.
