Amazing to think that even before all the massive development Macau will surpase Las Vegas in terms of money generated.
I visited Macau in 1993 and stayed at the Hyatt Regency out on Tiapa island. I thought Macau was a much poorer cousin of HK and seemed cool, with it unshiny buildings and much small feel.
Back then you had big hotels all with casinos and a few nightlclubs and bars, though not too many, HK had way more.
One night my buddy and I went out till about 4am and when we came back part of the lobby was roped off, casino chips all over the place.
Next morning we read in the newspaper the hotel had been robbed by 8 armed men of $25m HK. Police said the robbers came from mainland China in a Zodiac and hijacked a couple of taxis to get to the hotel. They were back in China by the time the poilce arrived.
We had dinner at a lovely old place designed like a Portuguese fort called the Pousada del Sao Tiago.
Will be interesting to see Macau in 10 years.
Just what we need, another Las Vegas in the world.
