On your bike

Ewan McGregor is going on another long motorbike journey, from Scotland to the southern tip of Africa.
I read his book, Long Way Round, about his ride with Charley Boorman across Asia and North America and enjoyed it, but when he says about his new trip that ‘we live in such a comfortable and easy time that it doesn’t do yourself any harm to go and test yourselves, and survive with just the bare essentials’, I’m thinking ‘bare essentials’.
Last time he had three top of the range bikes donated by BMW, two 4×4 support vehicles the whole trip, and local fixers waiting in every new country.
When they got a problem with one of the bikes, out came the satellite phone and they were on to the top BMW technical guy back in the UK, who if he couldn’t solve the problem made sure someone locally was on standby to.

Maybe these are just essentials of major film stars doing independent travel.

He better learn his lessons for the last trip. I watched that show and it was a joke for the most part. They used 650cc Beamers which were way too heavy for the unstable terrain. They had their PR staff run ahead and arrange PR receptions for them along the way. It wasn’t a natural trip, it was BBC pre-planned and they lost out for that. I could see them both getting frustrated. I guess the writing is on the wall, if you want a natural, freestyling trip, do it in a freestyling way, don’t pretend.
