You may fancy listening to a few tunes or catching up on some news during your visit to London but which way to twiddle your knob is the age old question. Here’s a quick run down on a selection of the radio stations filling, some would say polluting the airwaves of the capital.
BBC Radio One 97.6-99.8FM The BBC’s flagship station for the younger generation, Dance, HipHop, Rap, Indie, Rock, they’re having it and they’re having it large. Chris Moyles on their breakfast show is excellant.
BBC Radio 2 88-90.2FM The station your mum and dad listen to only now the BBC have started playing the Stone Roses and Chili Peppers alongside Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole.
BBC Radio 3 90-93FM Classical, cultural and nobody’s listening
BBC Radio 4 92.4-94.6FM Serious news, serious presenters, serious politicians, seriously boring
BBC Five Live 909MW Radio Bloke from the BBC, lots of sports coverage, news phone-ins, very politically correct
Capital Radio 95.8FM Where boybands are made and broken
Virgin Radio 105.8FM Was Branson’s then he sold for a profit, rock, indie, lots and lots of Queen and the Chili Peppers
Heart 106.2FM Cheery, happy, what to listen to on the school run
Magic 105.4FM What to listen to when your girlfriend dumps you because Percy Sledge is just a commercial break away
Smooth FM 102.2 Used to be JazzFM but a lot of people aren’t into jazz, still the same play list as before, 70’s and 80’s soul, funk and disco
Classic FM 100-102FM Does what it says on the tin, classical music in small portions
Talksport 1053/1089MW Football, football, football. The Alan Brazil Breakfast Show is the best show on radio, Hawksbee and Jacobs are good in the afternoon
ChoiceFM 107.1FM For those who like keeping it real, black music from a black station
Sunrise Radio Everything Asian
LBC 97.3FM News and phone-ins
If you have a digital radio you can receive a whole load of other stations covering all tastes but these are probably the main ones you’ll pick up on your regular radio.
