A Liverpool fan called Michael Shields, on his way back from the Champions League final in Istanbul, has just been jailed for 15 years in Bulgaria for the attempted murder of a barman.
Another fan called Graham Sankey, back home in Liverpool, now says he carried out the attack. It was amazing listening to Sankey’s lawyer on the radio today. From his and his clients point of view the bad guys in all this are the Bulgarian authorities for not taking his statement at face value, releasing Shields immediately and basically dropping the whole thing.
The lawyer, David Kirwan, reckons Sankey’s ‘in despair’ over Shields’ sentence. But not enough despair to go to the court in Bulgaria and own up to smashing the barman’s skull in. I would have thought he’d have a hard time living with that but maybe not.

To simply call this rough justice is outrageous. An innocent man has been jailed for a crime he did not commit, not only that, but a crime that has also been cconfessed to by another individual. Michael Sheilds is a victim in the most tragic situation. Our government have little power to assist him, and his fate lies in the hands of a country willing to sentence him, in the full knowledge of his innocence, making him a scapegoat for the murder of a Bulgarian citizen. This is a major miscarriage of justice, and an embarrasement to the European Laws and to the world at large. Being a follower of football, and having passion for sport does not make you a murderer!
