A new Lonely Planet guide says Britain is ’simply the most beautiful island on earth’.
Hmm, still trying to come to terms with that one, guess it depends on how you define beauty.
Sure there’s some great coastline and countryside but also too much overcrowded concrete space, rubbish and dodgy weather to earn that title.

Take them through the Blackwell tunnel, around Haringey and for a stroll through Edmonton some time and they can comment on that beauty.
60 million people living on small island that is over developed and very industrialized doesn’t seem like a candidate for ‘most beautiful island on earth’. Still there are corners where one could find peace and quiet.
There are *vast* areas of beautiful, unspoilt countryside in the UK. Have you ever even *been* to the Scottish Highlands? (and I’m not talking about Loch Ness and other tourist honeypots here!) People in the South East tend to think of London being bigger than it is - it isn’t - it really doesn’t make up that much of the UK in terms of land area and some stunningly scenic areas are less than an hour away.
And as for ‘dodgy weather’ - we’ve just had the sunniest 3 months on record - including about 6 weeks without a drop of rain… The weather in the UK of course often isn’t great, but complaining about our supposedly appaling weather is done waaaaaay too much in this country. Here’s a random fact - do you know they have palm trees on the beach in Plockton, N. W. Highland?

Tough to say how one island/place is more beautiful than another, but interesting that two-thirds of the team of inspectors came from pretty awesome islands themselves, Oz & Eire.
