Still saving the world

I can’t get into this Live8 event coming up in July. Making poverty history sounds all well and good, but how much is boosting their egos and careers a part of the reason for some of the acts taking part. If the Spice Girls show up for their supposed reunion, everything.

And Bob Geldof has obviously been smoking something he shouldn’t, calling for a million people to march on Edingurgh during the G8 conference and an armada of small boats to sail across the world’s busiest shipping lane to pick up people in France and bring them over. A disaster waiting to happen.

I like their intentions, but wonder about their logic. Actually getting the G8 leaders to make concrete decisions is the best way to help Africans improve their situation. A combination of strong economics and educational, infrastructure incentives tied to democracy, fiscal responsibilty and lawfulness could help.

The G8 leaders know already where they stand. Bush really isn’t interested. The others don’t have the cash to chuck down without the others helping.

A million people will not change these guys minds.

Here in Bali we get an assortment of the same things going on. ‘Paddle for Peace’ was one of them. A bunch of guys paddling canoes and surf skis round in circles off of Kuta beach. Supposedly they were ’showing the terrorists that people won’t be put off by terror’. I don’t know if the terrorists check out the local ‘What’s On’ magazine, like watersports, or even give a damn what surfheads do. But to them they were making a statement.

I think I’ll go and masturbate for world peace.
