Britain is the world leader when it comes to CCTV with more cameras filming its citizens going about their every day business than anywhere else. Now Barking and Dagenham in east London has become the first borough in the capital to introduce talking CCTV.
They’ve spent £25,000 fitting loudspeakers to existing cameras and will be used by the operators in the council’s cctv control room. They say the aim of the talking cameras is to fight crime, litter and antisocial behaviour, and get the public to reflect on their behaviour and the example they are setting.
‘Residents will be confronted with messages asking them to keep their valuables safe, telling them that their behaviour is being monitored and to not drop litter. Other messages will be added to help reinforce the existing messages about what is acceptable behaviour’ says the council website. 1984 may have come and gone but Big Brother is well and truely here. Southwark will be the next borough to introduce the system later this year.
