Came back from work this afternoon in time to catch the Boat Race, one of the most unique annual events in the British sporting calendar.

The 149th race between coxed 8 crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, on a 41/4 mile widing course along the River Thames from Putney Bridge to Chiswick Bridge.

This race gets a fair amount of criticism for being elitist, a private race between the two top universities in Britain, but you have to say the competition from the two student crews is great.

After 18 minutes of all out effort today on a windy Thames, Oxford won by 1ft, the closest margin since the race began in 1829.
