Ellen MacArthur has been all over the news today after completing sailing around the world in the fastest time, and reaction seems to be split between people either prostating themselves in praise or saying who cares, why doesn’t she get a proper job.
Sailing around the world on your own is not easy but she did have a £2 million custom built boat that included just about every computerised aid available, and a full time backup team on the job 24/7 providing help with navigation and weather information, where to find the wind etc.
The science editor of the Daily Mail describes it as ‘one of the finest voyages of all time by arguably the finest sailor in British history-and the finest sailor in history full stop’. Give me a break.
I laughed listening to a phone-in today which was talking about why she was being referred to as a hero, a caller said his dad had been on north Atlantic convoys in WW2 and that if she had a pack of U-Boats chasing her she’d find out how brave she was.
