‘You cannot be…..’

Just finished reading John McEnroe’s autobiography ‘Serious’, which I can highly recommend.
I was a Borg fan when McEnroe was emerging as a player in the late 70’s and didn’t really take to him then, but since he started doing tennis commentary in the 90’s, which he’s brillant at, and after reading this book I definitely appreciate more what he did for tennis.

He comes across as a totally grounded person who knows what fantastic things he did in sport but also where that fits into the real world. And he also doesn’t hold back on saying what he thinks of players past and present.
An excellant book, he can laugh at himself when he’s made a mistake but can also say ‘ here’s where I did really well’.
Worth a read.

We saw Mac play at Wimbledon once and it was obvious he was the deal. I hated the way he abused umpires and lines people (they cannot argue back, so he was able to abuse them on national TV, very cowardly).

Now he has learned to shut his trap before someone caught up with him he is actually a good commentator. I respect his knowledge and his passion for the game.
