Who’s going?

The final shakeout of teams who are going to the World Cup next June should almost be done this week. After last night’s qualifiers 24 countries have made it through, probably the only big name from Europe not to have guaranteed a place yet is France.

I’m really surprised at some of the African countries who haven’t made it. Nigeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Senegal, you would have said the first three were bankers to go to Germany.

Got to feel sorry for Australia, every World Cup qualifying they win the Oceania group easily and than have to play a playoff against the fifth ranked South American team. I can understand why they want to go through the Asian qualifiers.

No shock that the English media is getting the ‘we can win it’ bandwagon rolling again. Apparently Sven Goran Eriksson has the ‘Golden Generation’ of players to work with and can’t fuck it up. I think he can.

I can’t wait for this tournament. It’s going to be awesome and plenty of new countries to make it interesting. There’s always an upset and a team that exceeds expectations so I wonder who it will be. I hope Australia makes it, but we always seem to stumble at the final hurdle. Maybe this time will be different.
